More cannabis workers in New Jersey have elected to unionize.

Garden Society workers voted to become the first cannabis workers in New Jersey to join Teamsters Local 469, becoming the 40 newest members of the union cook and manufacture cannabis products.

"Garden Society workers made their voices heard loud and clear that they want Local 469 to represent them in winning the strong contract they deserve," said Michael Broderick, Local 469 President. "As a new and growing industry in New Jersey, it is vital that we fight to ensure that the cannabis industry jobs are good careers with a fair wage, safe working conditions, quality health care benefits, and a pathway to retiring with dignity. Garden Society workers — and all cannabis workers in New Jersey — deserve nothing less. Local 469 is proud to be in the fight alongside these workers."

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 360 also announced that its ‘Cannabis Workers Rising’ campaign won over another dispensary in New Jersey. Workers at the Plantabis drive-thru dispensary in Rahway have voted to enter the new year as members of UFCW Local 360. Plantabis currently operates six dispensaries across New Jersey and bills itself as the number one dispensary in “the Tri-State area.”

“Organizing is the best defense against today’s anti-worker movements,” said Hugh Giordano, UFCW Local 360’s director of organizing. “There are those who seek to strip workers of their rights, reducing employee opportunities, weaking families and damaging entire communities. We won’t stand for that and we urge employers and employees to join us in ensuring the long term success of our marijuana industry, for all.”
