Bipartisan Bill Plans for 'Inevitable End' to Federal Cannabis Prohibition

The bill is being proposed by two Republicans and a progressive Democrat.

A bipartisan group of U.S. Congressmen has proposed a bill to prepare for the “inevitable end” to federal cannabis prohibition.

The PREPARE Act would establish the “Commission on the Federal Regulation of Cannabis.”

The commission would include members from various federal agencies along with experts and interested parties from outside the federal government.

The commission would advise on the development of a regulatory framework to ensure safe production and consumption of cannabis.

It’s being modeled after the alcohol industry, which “accounts for the unique needs, rights and laws of each state.”

The framework would be presented to Congress within one year.

Interestingly, as Politico Reporter Natalie Fertig points out, the bill is being proposed by two Republicans and a progressive Democrat.

The bill’s co-sponsors want lawmakers across the ideological spectrum to engage on cannabis reform.
