Cannabis Banking Left Out of Congressional Spending Bill

SAFE is in danger.

A pair of bills targeting cannabis banking protections and expungements for cannabis-related criminal records may be in trouble.

The two bills are the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act and the Harnessing Opportunities by Pursuing Expungement (HOPE) Act.

According to Marijuana Moment, the proposed cannabis legislation was left out of a congressional spending bill released this week.

However, the spending bill does hold onto a rider that blocks adult-use, recreational cannabis sales in Washington, D.C.

The latest development for cannabis legislation comes after reports earlier this month of plans to push the bills through.

According to Axios, a group led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) planned to attach SAFE and HOPE to “must-pass” year-end legislation.

As the report points out, there’s still a slim chance that SAFE could be introduced as a standalone bill before Congress adjourns for the year.
