Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill Friday that will provide some relief to the state’s cannabis transport license holders.
The new law waives annual fees for existing cannabis transporting organization license holders from January 1, 2024, through January 1, 2027.
The bill also prohibits the Department of Agriculture from accepting new applications for cannabis transporting organization licenses during the same timeframe.
According to Green Market Report, the pause is intended to prevent market oversaturation and provide a leg-up to newer companies in the space.
Pritzker called cannabis legalization pointless without “reinvestment and repair for the communities left behind by the war on drugs.”
“Small businesses, whether transporters, growers, or dispensaries, must be able to succeed if we wish to achieve that equity," he said in a statement.
