CEN at MJBizCon: Cannabis Industry Gets Serious About In-House Product Testing

Operators striving to achieve a consistent brand experience can benefit from in-house testing.

The Cannabis Equipment News (CEN) team recently traveled to MJBizCon 2024 in Las Vegas from December 4 through December 6. At the show, we interviewed leaders from nearly every aspect of the industry.

Orange Photonics makes portable, in-house potency testing for the cannabis industry, including the beverage and edible markets. The company has also seen an uptick in interest from the psychedelics industry.

The company's LightLab 3 Cannabis Analyzer is easy to recognize; it's the bright orange lab in a suitcase seen throughout the industry. The LightLab 3 is a fit-for-purpose high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) product that can test the potency of up to 19 cannabinoids using a step-by-step process that walks the user through each test.

At MJBizCon 2024 in Las Vegas, Dylan Wilks, founder and CTO of Orange Photonics, said industry operators are becoming more interested in bringing testing in-house as companies become more serious about product consistency, especially in the edibles sector, where potencies can vary from batch to batch.

"Sending [products] to a lab is great, but it costs money, takes time, and you can't iterate as quickly as you could with in-house testing," Wilks says. He says the value of in-house testing and the cost savings are realized over time. While it looks complicated, Wilks says the analyzer is relatively easy to use — operators don't have to be scientists to use it.

Wilks is seeing more serious industry players use LightLab, particularly those trying to make a sound, consistent brand experience. He has also seen operators push regulators to use the product.
