The Cannabis Equipment News (CEN) team recently traveled to MJBizCon 2024 in Las Vegas from December 4 through December 6. At the show, we interviewed leaders from nearly every aspect of the industry.
Paxiom Group was front and center at MJBizCon 2024 with a booth that was hard to miss—it was directly in front of the entrance.
The multi-industry packaging leader had several cannabis automation solutions on display at the show, including the Dryce Optical Sorting Machine, a Comac Beverage filling solution and the company's Vision 360 Pre-Roll Inspection Machine, which has been upgraded since its debut at the show last year.
Luis Pilonieta, director of sales at Paxiom, says the Dryce is an ideal optical sorting machine for dry flower or edibles. The platform has a pair of high-resolution cameras that can inspect the entire surface area of a product, hundreds at a time, looking for inconsistencies and foreign material. The machine can reject any bad products before they are sent on to be packaged.
"[Quality control] is not just about your brand, but it's more about the consistency," Pilonieta says, adding that customers get to know brands when they offer a consistent product and experience, and operators achieve consistency with automation.
The Comac canning machine on display can depalletize cans, rinse them, introduce them to fillers, fill and seam the cans, rinse them and case pack (box them up). Many operators still use co-packers for beverages, and Pilonieta says such partnerships are a great starting point, but they come with limitations. For example, operators are beholden to the contract packager's schedule, which can cause supply chain disruptions. As demand for beverages grows, he says bringing canning capabilities in-house makes more sense.
