Colorado Springs, one of the biggest cities in Colorado, has been a recreational cannabis holdout for more than a decade since the state first legalized it.
The city was led for eight years by Mayor John Suthers, the state’s former attorney general and a staunch opponent of legalizing adult-use recreational cannabis.
But last fall, voters in the city cast their ballots in favor of allowing legal recreational cannabis in Colorado Springs.
Despite nearly 55% of Colorado Springs voters approving the measure, city officials are preparing a new measure that would block adult-use sales.
“We’re just going to give the citizens one chance to make sure this was their intent,” Councilman Dave Donelson told The Denver Post.
The new measure is being framed as “simply verifying” the will of the voters. But opponents to the new measure said voters have already clearly voiced support for recreational cannabis sales.
