David Sandelman is the founder of Cannatrol, which specializes in cannabis post-harvest processing, like drying, curing and storage.
Before coming to cannabis, Sandelman started in the cheese and charcuterie industry, making technology used to age and cure products. One day, he realized that the same science he used in the food industry could also apply to cannabis, and he says it has created some of the industry's finest flower.
Sandelman found that conventional drying and curing methods were causing 25% to 30% of trichome heads to rupture. "The whole purpose for growing the plant is for the trichome heads because that's the factory that makes all the good stuff that we want out of the plant, and they are being damaged by conventional dry cure." Cannatrol's techniques provide about 16% more terpenes than other flower drying methods, according to the company.
Sandelman says operators are constantly over drying flower so it doesn't mold. He says, "Every pound of bound water you remove is one pound of top-line revenue you just threw out."
