Verano, one of the largest multi-state cannabis companies in the U.S., has fired up pre-roll production in Ohio shortly after the state issued guidance for the popular cannabis product category.

Ohio began adult-use recreational cannabis sales in August 2024 and earlier this year, roughly 12 months since the market kicked off, authorized the sale of cannabis pre-rolls.

Now Verano’s cultivation facility in Canton, its only such operation in Ohio, has begun producing pre-rolls for sale in the state. The 22,000-square-foot facility employs about 50 workers who manage the grow rooms, harvest and dry the cannabis plants, and process the cannabis for products ranging from whole flower to edibles. Many of the buds that are too small to be packaged as flower are ground for use in pre-rolls.

"Pre-rolls are the fastest-growing category in cannabis right now, followed by vapes," Steve Mazeika, vice president of communications for Verano, told the Canton Repository. The company said it has sold more than 3 million pre-rolls this year, both in its own retail channels and to its wholesale partners.

Ohio recently surpassed $3 billion in total cannabis sales.

According to recently released data from the state's Division of Cannabis Control (DCC), total sales as of Sept. 13 sit at about $3.04 billion. Recreational accounts for just over $800 million of that total while medical, which has been available in Ohio since January 2019, sits at about $2.23 billion.
