Cannabis Wizard’s Arrest Sparks Protests at Courthouse

Gandalf, as he's affectionately known, is a "green fairy."

A medicinal cannabis supplier, known affectionately as “Gandalf,” was arrested in New Zealand for illegally growing and supplying marijuana.

According to the Guardian, police raided the property of Paul Smith, one of the country’s “green fairies,” and destroyed cannabis plants and greenhouses.

Smith was charged with growing, possessing and selling cannabis. He could face as much as eight years in prison.

The charges against “Gandalf” sparked protests outside the courthouse where his hearing was held.

As the report points out, medical cannabis is legal in New Zealand but many users rely on “green fairies” for easier access instead of trying to obtain a prescription.

“This isn’t just an attack on one man, it’s an assault on hundreds of patients who rely on … affordable relief,” said one of the protesters.
