A former U.S. Navy site for developing and testing fighter jets could become a cannabis cultivation operation.
According to Newsday, Signature Partners acquired the Long Island property that once belonged to Grumman Corp. before it was acquired Northrop.
The 20-acre campus with three office buildings has been vacant since 1996. But now Signature is seeking to reuse the existing structures to create an indoor cannabis grow. The three buildings together total 126,500 square feet.
But the company may require a special waiver for the project since it's located within the Central Pine Barrens Core Preservation Area.
If the project gets the green light, Signature will still need to find a New York licensed grower to set up shop in the space.
“We want to be clear that we are not in the cannabis business and are just providing a suitable facility to grow plants indoors under controlled and secure conditions," they wrote in a letter to the Pine Barrens Commission.
