California's Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) has issued a pair of mandatory recalls in the past six days over Aspergillus concerns.

The first recall was announced March 20, 2024, for Almora 14 Half Gram Pre-Rolls that tested positive for Aspergillus niger, a mold.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Aspergillus niger is classified as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in food production. However, the microbe can produce toxins that negatively affect human health, including rare reports of pneumonia.

The pre-rolls were packaged by Fluids Manufacturing, doing business as Mammoth Distribution, Heavy Hitters and CA Manufacturing Co-op. The products we sold after December 28, 2023, at 98 different dispensaries in California.

The DCC provided the impacted batch number, 1A40603000067F6000028278, and UID Number 1A40603000067F6000028278.

The DCC also issued a mandatory product recall due to the presence of Aspergillus terreus in a single UPNORTH 3.5 gram cannabis flower product, Maui-Wowie. Aspergillus terreus is a fungus that has been associated with aspergillosis of the lungs.

The Maui-Wowie was sold after September 15, 2023, at a handful of California dispensaries.

The DCC provided the following batch number, UN9723MAW, and UID Number, 1A4060300003B66000224398.

Consumers should check their packaging for the UID or batch numbers listed above and dispose of the product or return it to the retailer if the numbers match. Any individual experiencing symptoms or any adverse reactions, should contact their physician immediately.
