Easter Sunday fell on April 20 this year, leading to a drop in 4/20 cannabis sales compared to the same day in 2024.

Sales for the weekend of 4/20 as a whole, however, easily outpaced last year's numbers to set new records, according to cannabis tech platform Sweed.

Sweed analysts found that total purchases for the weekend were up 63% year-over-year, while the number of products sold jumped by 81%. Retailer profit margins also climbed, and the industry saw a 65% increase in unique buyers.

The strong weekend numbers, Sweed officials said, suggested that buyers did their shopping on Friday and Saturday rather than on Easter Sunday — or 4/20 proper. Gross sales were down for April 20 year-over-year, while transaction totals were flat and the average basket size slipped by more than 14%.

"While the 4/20 Sunday dip illustrates how calendar collisions can impact day-of performance, the robust weekend numbers tell a larger story," Sweed officials wrote. "Consumers still show up for cannabis holidays, especially when incentivized with the right deals."
