CEN at MJBizCon: Customer Service Makes the Difference in Cannabis Automation

High Tek provides 24-hour tech support to ensure its machines are always running.

High Tek, a custom manufacturer and supplier of weighing and packaging machines, came to MJBizCon this year with a focus on showing all the little ways the company has been reinventing and fine-tuning the parts on its existing machines. Jeremy Peterson, service manager at High Tek, said the company's efforts are geared toward sturdier, more American-made parts.

"We saw some parts that were failing and we know we can't have that," Peterson said. "So, we had to take care of it."

High Tek brought several of its machines to the show floor for demos but sales were so good that many of those same machines were going home with customers instead of being packed up and shipped back. Peterson said part of what's driving that success is High Tek's customer service, including a 24-hour tech support line.

Another key to High Tek's success is the cannabis industry increasingly buying into automation. Peterson said cannabis hasn't necessarily been the biggest part of his company's business but this year it's accounted for 30% to 40%. As more legal cannabis markets come online on a state-by-state basis, demand increases and packaging everything by hand becomes less viable.

As automation continues to take hold in cannabis production, Peterson said he's also seeing a lot more robotics becoming involved in both cannabis and food packaging. High Tek is making sure its machines can integrate well with robots and cobots so its customers can introduce new technology with minimal workflow disruptions.

The Cannabis Equipment News (CEN) team recently traveled to MJBizCon 2024 in Las Vegas from December 4 through December 6. At the show, we interviewed leaders from nearly every aspect of the industry. We didn't have time to interview everybody, so if we missed you, please reach out to [email protected]. MJBizCon 2025 is scheduled to be held from December 2, 2025, through December 5, 2025, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
