Kentucky's long road to launching a legal cannabis market appears to be near the end.

It's been more than two years since the state officially legalized medical cannabis and almost a whole year since the new laws kicked in. But Governor Andy Beshear said it's looking like the market will open to consumers before the end of the year.

"I believe within the next couple of weeks that our first dispensary will have product on its shelf. That is the Ohio County dispensary that we think will be the first, but we believe it's going to scale up very quickly from that first moment," he said, according to WLWT.

The update from Beshear comes after he said in October that his state's medical cannabis program reached another milestone as Natural State GreenGrass CannaCo, a Tier III cultivation facility based in Madison County, has been approved to begin cultivation activities. The facility will eventually expand to 25,000 square feet of cultivation space.

“This operator, and so many others, will help us ensure that Kentuckians suffering from serious medical conditions will have safe access to medical cannabis for years to come,” said Beshear in a statement.

The opening follows Armory Kentucky in July introducing the first medical cannabis inventory in Kentucky history.
