California's Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) is seeking proposals from public universities in California for cannabis-related academic research that will address critical gaps in scientific knowledge and guide future policy decisions.
Through this Request for Proposals (RFP), DCC seeks to:
- Expand academic knowledge of cannabis
- Gain insight into how government policy decisions impact individuals, communities, and equity
- Support government officials in fact-based policymaking
For this round of funding opportunities, we are prioritizing topics that build on existing research and leverage insights across state lines, fostering a more connected and comprehensive understanding of cannabis.
Priority research areas include:
- Examinations on the development of crop yield models
- Consumer preferences and behavior
- Educational approaches to improve public health and safety
- Examinations of state and local policies
- How cannabis affects the human body and mental health
- Environmental sustainability
- Comparative analyses of enforcement strategies
This Cannabis Academic Research Grant Program is funded by cannabis tax revenues established under Proposition 64 (2016), which legalized cannabis use for adults 21 years of age and older.
Research findings will be made available to the public at no cost, supporting broad access to science-backed research while contributing to a national understanding of cannabis.
