Senators Plan to Push Through Cannabis Legislation

The focus is on cannabis banking and record expungement.

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators reportedly has a plan to push through some cannabis legislation before year’s end.

According to Axios, the group led by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is focusing on passing cannabis banking and expungement bills.

The two bills are the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act and the Harnessing Opportunities by Pursuing Expungement (HOPE) Act.

SAFE would allow cannabis businesses to open bank accounts in states where the substance is legal.

HOPE would allow the Justice Department to create grants that would go to state and local governments seeking to expunge cannabis convictions.

The Justice Department has reportedly signed off on the legislation.

The group plans to attach the bills to “must-pass” year-end legislation like the annual National Defense Authorization Act.
