This week, Nancy Weber, cannabis sales manager at nVenia, joins the Cannabis Equipment News podcast to discuss how she found cannabis more-or-less by accident and why the company invented a high-accuracy multihead weighing scale designed for the industry.

In 2015, Nancy Weber was working in sales for Ohlson Packaging, a manufacturer of food packaging equipment based in Massachusetts. She was on the lookout for new prospects, so she turned to the internet to find potential clients. During her search, cannabis popped up as an emerging new industry. So, she picked up the phone and started calling prospective customers on the West Coast.

Later that year, she sold her first packaging system to a company in Colorado but soon realized that food packaging equipment wasn't a plug-and-play fit for packaging cannabis flower. The machine had problems with accuracy, so it was back to the drawing board as Ohlson updated the equipment. In the end, Weber says the company invented a high-accuracy multihead weighing scale designed for the cannabis industry.

Ohlson served the cannabis industry from 2015 to 2020. Around 2018, Ohlson was acquired by Duravant, which had also purchased Arpac, Hamer and Fischbein, all packaging companies. All of the brands were rolled into a single subsidiary, nVenia, which built a new headquarters in Wood Dale, Illinois.

Around 2020, the company decided to get out of the cannabis industry due to fears over the industry's federally illegal status. But times have changed, and six months ago, the company decided to jump back in.

When Weber first stumbled into the cannabis industry, she found operators that pushed back on automation. Now, she says it has evolved into a sophisticated and educated industry that embraces technology.
