KIRKWOOD, N.Y. (AP) โ€” A Canadian cannabis company has started converting a former vacuum cleaner plant in upstate New York into its first U.S. processing facility for industrial hemp.

Canopy Growth executives gathered at the former Shop Vac site in the Broome County town of Kirkwood on Monday along with U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer and other elected officials. They said the $150 million facility could generate hundreds of jobs.

Canopy Growth plans to extract cannabidiol, or CBD, from hemp leaves. The extract could later be used in ointments, dog treats and a host of other products.

Canopy Growth envisions a hemp industrial park that will attract other entrepreneurs focused on the emerging hemp and CBD markets.
