New York said it is transitioning from BioTrack to Metrc for cannabis seed-to-sale tracking in the state.
The decision comes after a recently announced partnership between Metrc and BioTrack. The state's Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) said it completed a full assessment of the systems implications and has determined that it is in the best interest of New York’s regulated cannabis market to transition to Metrc.
"OCM recognizes how essential a seed-to-sale (STS) system is to maintaining the integrity of New York’s cannabis industry. The agency is actively working with Metrc to develop a project timeline, with a targeted integration go-live in early 2026," the OCM wrote.
The agency promised that additional information regarding the Metrc NY Application Programming Interface (API), test environment, trainings, inventory tags, and integration timelines will be shared as it becomes available.
Last month, Metrc and BioTrack agreed to form a new independent company, BT Government, to manage BioTrack’s government-facing operations.
“Metrc has agreed to enter a strategic partnership with BioTrack, focused on their regulatory track-and-trace technology in order to improve standards and meet the growing demands of regulators, licensees, and consumers. This partnership will drive economic opportunity in the legal market while enhancing supply chain transparency and improving public safety. We are committed to ensuring continuity in every state program, maintaining transparent, secure and reliable supply chains that benefit regulators, licensees and ultimately consumers," the company said in a statement.
For BioTrack, it means specific assets related to its regulatory technology are being spun off from the company’s core business. It said the move will allow it to expand its focus on commercial cannabis solutions including ERP and POS platforms.
