CEN at MJBizCon: Infighting, Unhealthy Competition is Hurting the Industry

Richard Batenburg, CEO and chairman of Clear Cannabis, said there's enough to fight against outside the industry.

The Cannabis Equipment News team recently traveled to MJBizCon held in Las Vegas from November 28, 2023 through December 1, 2023. At the show, we interviewed equipment manufacturers, cultivators, operators and new product developers to learn more about what they bring to the cannabis industry.

Richard Batenburg, CEO and chairman of Clear Cannabis, said his company's best partners are typically new to the cannabis industry.

The Clear was invented in 2013 and Batenburg acquired the intellectual property in 2019. The company, which mostly produces high-potency vapes, acts as a licensing platform for compliant operators in each state. Clear is in 11 states but Batenburg said his company is currently courting, interviewing and vetting partners in Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Florida.

While the Clear's primary product is flavored vapes, it also makes edibles and infused pre-rolls, too. Batenburg said tablets are in the final stages of beta testing in Colorado, and the company will also pursue topicals.

Clear is based in and trials everything in Colorado while using botanically derived terpenes, and it's able to ship them across state lines because they're not cannabis derived.

Looking across the cannabis industry, Batenburg said price compression and capitalization are the biggest challenges right now. He also sees a lot of infighting, unhealthy competition and ego that is hurting the industry. He said there is enough room for everybody and more than enough to fight against outside the industry.

The next MJBizCon will be held in Las Vegas from December 3, 2024 through December 6, 2024 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
