California's Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) is issuing this notice of voluntary recall for multiple “Kush Creaturz” flower products due to labeling that is attractive to children.
The products in question feature cartoon characters with named including "Randy Resin," "Marty Mids," and "Frank the Fuego Man." Each package contains five grams of either sativa, indica or hybrid cannabis flower. Most of the products were packaged and sold this year though some of them date back to 2023.
For now, the DCC is advising consumers who have these cannabis products in their homes to take safety precautions like keeping cannabis products in a locked, childproof container; keeping the container out of sight and out of reach of children and pets; keeping all cannabis products in the original, childproof packaging from the licensed retailer; resealing the package of cannabis after use; and disposing of cannabis products in a way where the products cannot be easily seen or accessed by children or pets.
As for retailers, they'll need to wait for the distributor, GC Global, to send notices with instructions about responding to the recall.
The California recall comes as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) continue to crack down on THC products that look similar to traditional consumer products. Earlier this month, the agencies sent warning letters to five companies for illegally selling copycat food products containing delta-8 THC. The products feature packaging that strongly resembles Oreos, Skittles, Chips Ahoy and other consumer packaged goods.
“Inadequate or confusing labeling can result in children or unsuspecting adults consuming products with strong resemblance to popular snacks and candies that contain delta-8 THC without realizing it,” said FDA Principal Deputy Commissioner Namandjé Bumpus, Ph.D. “As accidental ingestion and/or overconsumption of delta-8 THC containing products could pose considerable health risks, the companies who sell these illegal products are demonstrating complete neglect for consumer safety. The FDA will continue to work to safeguard the health and safety of U.S. consumers by monitoring the marketplace and taking action when companies sell products that present a threat to public health.”
