The Cannabis Equipment News team recently traveled to MJBizCon, held in Las Vegas from November 28 through December 1. At the show, we interviewed equipment manufacturers, cultivators, operators and new product developers to learn more about what they bring to the cannabis industry.

Genetec is a software company that offers a platform to unify disparate security applications, like video surveillance, alarm data, access control data, and license plate recognition, and bring them together in a single dashboard.

Mike Weyrich, account executive at Genetec, says that new dispensaries often take the path of least resistance, employing minimum security requirements depending on state regulations. However, as businesses grow, they look to get more out of their security programs.

Genetec's platform is scalable, suitable for a single dispensary with 20 cameras or a grow facility with hundreds of cameras, sensors and a more robust security program. The company's dashboard provides full visibility and management of a cannabis operator's entire security ecosystem.

Weyrich says cybersecurity is a top priority. He stresses that many network devices have security vulnerabilities, but Genetec encrypts all device data that comes into the software. He adds that many entry-level security systems only have a few proactive security features.

Weyrich says software is a small piece of the security puzzle, typically about 10% to 15% of the total project spend. Genetec has a modular approach that allows customers to buy what they need as they scale.

The next MJBizCon will be held from December 3, 2024, through December 6, 2024, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
