Recreational Cannabis Sales in Ohio Off to a Fast Start

Out-of-state customers are part of the equation.

After one week of recreational cannabis sales in Ohio, the industry is already seeing sales that match what’s happening in much more mature markets.

Jason Erkes, chief communications officer at Cresco Labs, which operates Sunnyside cannabis dispensaries, said some of that can be attributed to customers from out of state.

“We’re seeing a lot of out-of-state licenses when people are checking in,” he told Fox 19 Now. “A lot of out-of-state license plates in the parking lot.”

Indiana and Kentucky, which both border Ohio, have not legalized adult-use recreational cannabis.

Although it’s still illegal to transport cannabis products across state lines, some people are willing to take the risk, he said. And it shows there’s a market in those prohibition states.

“Those states are leaving a lot of tax revenue on the table,” Erkes said.
