Wisconsin Governor Wants to Prioritize Legalizing Cannabis

The state is surrounded by legal markets.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said his state should prioritize cannabis legalization in 2025.

Wisconsin’s neighbor Minnesota recently legalized recreational cannabis and is expected to officially launch its market next year.

Minnesota will join Illinois and Michigan as states with legal recreational cannabis that border Wisconsin.

Efforts toward cannabis legalization in Wisconsin have so far met strong resistance from the state’s Republican-controlled legislature.

But Evers hopes his state can advance “evidence-based justice reform,” which would in part include cannabis legalization.

While social justice reform is a priority for Wisconsin, the state also likely needs to consider the millions in tax revenue it's leaving on the table by maintaining total prohibition.
