CEN at MJBizCon: Edibles Without Extracts Allow True Strain Specificity

Azuca CEO and co-founder Kim Sanchez Rael discusses her company's new whole-plant activator.

The Cannabis Equipment News team recently traveled to MJBizCon held in Las Vegas from November 28, 2023 through December 1, 2023. At the show, we interviewed equipment manufacturers, cultivators, operators and new product developers to learn more about what they bring to the cannabis industry.

Azuca serves as a provider of premium ingredients and formulations to the cannabis industry. Kim Sanchez Rael, CEO and co-founder, said the company has a lot of brand partners who have been holding steady despite headwinds. But now Azuca is seeing more products in the pipeline for 2024.

But please don't refer to what Azuca is doing as emulsions or nano-emulsions. Rael prefers the term advanced formulations, which help turn cannabinoid molecules into easier to use ingredients for any consumable cannabis product that doesn't involve either vaping or smoking. That's particularly true for cannabis beverages, a rising product category that Rael said fills the need for social experiences.

Azuca this year released an activator product for the ready-to-drink category and a whole-plant activator, which allows edible makers to use flower as the active ingredient. Rael said the process gives edibles the full cannabinoid, flavonoid and terpene profile of the flower. She compared it to the wine industry wanting to provide experiences around different varietals of grapes, in that it allows true strain specificity.

Rael was also a recent guest on the Cannabis Equipment News podcast. Check out the episode to learn more about how Azuca was started and how the company's technology takes cannabis edibles to the next level.

The next MJBizCon will be held in Las Vegas from December 3, 2024 through December 6, 2024 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
